The Art of Wood

our mission in woodworking

You are currently browsing the archives for March, 2009.

We will be displaying at two upcoming local shows in Charleston at the Civic Center, and would like you to stop by and check out our booth. We will be in booth # 404, in the Grand Hall in both shows.

First will be the WV Construction & Design Exposition. The Expo is this Wednesday, March 25th from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM and Thursday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. It is billed as “The only West Virginia trade show for the construction, engineering and architectural industries”.

Also we will be at the 2009 West Virginia Home Show. The Home Show is Friday, April 3rd from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Saturday from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Fifteen to twenty thousand people are expected to attend.

Come and see for yourself some of the special wood we can work with to build your custom piece of furniture, kitchen, study or entire house. We have some of the best craftsmen in the state and we will have examples of our woodwork at the booth as well as photos and references. Come visit with us in Booth 404 and find out why we have won over thirty regional and statewide awards for our custom work.

Book matching boards means taking two boards sawn sequentially from a tree and opening them up similar to opening a book.  This yields a matched pair of boards that can make excellent looking wider panels or a wide tabletop.  Here is an example, first in the rough boards, then in a finished 4′ x 12′ conference tabletop.

We look for sequential boards in all the panel material we purchase and make an effort to purchase sets  of boards from the same log, specifically book matched sets.  We believe that seeing the symmetry in a book match reinforces the grain and beauty in the wood, making it more than the sum of its parts.  The echo of shape, color and form serves to make a stronger statement than either board could do on its own.
